In February 2009, I adopted a Soldier through SoldiersAngels.org. Soldiers Angels is a non-profit organization of thirty different teams supporting branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

I adopted Abby Norat. Abby is stationed in Afghanistan. An adoption is at least a year commitment. Adopting is free, however I must purchase supplies for my adopted soldier. Suggested supplies are groceries, toiletries, clothing, envelopes, postcards, paper, sheets, blankets, or anything else a soldier might request. I must send at least one 'care package' a month and at least 2 letters/postcards a week. It is common not to receive anything in return.

In addition to sending requested items I will send hand crafted gifts. I believe this will create a connection between my adopted soldier and I. My first special gift was over 20 unique valentines, which I sent Abby for Valentine's Day. The majority of the gifts share military/American themes. I will document the process on this blog: Soldier Love

UPDATE: On November 9 Abby is heading home to Texas!
